I know how to set gains, but when the subs are in the trunk should you face them into the cab so you can here the distortion, since when they are facing towards the trunk it can mask distortion. It's something I have wondered about.
Then if your not able to have the subs facing into the cab, then do you just stand by your open trunk and play the tones till you here it distort?

I always install the system the way I want it to be before setting any gains.  I suppose there is no "right" way to do it, just do what works.

Best way is to use a microphone and a device that measures sound output. This way you can properly tune.

Doing it by ear is never perfect, but close enough. have the subs facing the way you normally want them to be in the car. Listen from the drivers seat, passenger seat, and back seat if you have. Set the gains that way.
