Alpine 5900 CD player as well as a Sony piece were released in 85.   According to info on the internet, Sony first released one in 82.  That one was very pricey.  By 85, they were actually affordable, for some people.  The Sony unit without a tuner sold for around 700 dollars in 85.

to avoid all this confusion i would just rewire the whole system, that way i know its good and up to date.
You Sir, speak my language. I am not sure if I have ever encountered something that I did not need to rewire.
Yeah, I asked, there is no CD changer, I don't know why I thought there was. The car is not at my house, but I will definitely look tomorrow to try and find an amp. Re-run the wires, I like it. I think you may be right about an amp, the DIN wires are tiny, much smaller then anything I have encountered with car audio before. If there is an amp, it's probably old as dirt too, so I figure I'll just rip it out and straight wire the speakers. Hopefully those will work without issue. Thanks for all the info guys, I will keep you updated.

Ha, I figured it out. What I assumed was a CD changer in the trunk was in fact the amp. I yanked it all out and rewired from the ground up, works fine. Thanks for all the help.

That's usually the best approach when working with an older vehicle that's had god knows what done to it.  Good job.
