How long have you owned the Jetta?  Maybe the are other car issues since it would not start on the remote start attempts. Just a thought.

Usually on VW, you are not supposed to start car without the chip key. If so many times it is started without key, it disable that car.
This could be that they bypass is not working properly and caused it to go into lockout mode where it cranks but wont turn over.
May need to go to dealer to get keys reprogrammed.

yea i would think the same thing, the car might have a security feature that shuts off the fuel system if there are too many failed starts in a row. if you have the manual there might be some way to unlock the system manually.
as for the remote start not working, its probably missing because on german cars the only way to bypass the immobilizer is to give up a key and install it under the dash and hardwire it into the system. so maybe when you bought it they took the key out so they could give it to you. thats my theory.
