Yes, I do want to do it right, my ears, my fun car.

So what do you suggest; what uF cap across the tweets?

and what do I do with the 4" midranges in the doors?

BTW.. did open the old amplifier,

None of the caps were swollen,

no obvious sticky stuff, powder, burns, anywhere.

Clean, neat, and broke.

UPDATE - The amazing, self-healing Stereo

I re-installed the non-working amplifier.

Started the car, stereo face said "Protected"

Proceeded to checked all the fuses, all were OK.

Removed anti-theft faceplate, and hit RESET button on stereo.

Hotel California suddenly had bass notes and a clear mid-range.

?? wth ??

That's good. That saves me replying that you don't build new crossovers simply because you change the amp...

I can hear the sarcasm all the way over here.

You assume there are crossovers in the wiring.

However, all the crossovers and other filters are built *into* the amplifier.

Well I thank you for the compliment, but it was not sarcasm. It was a simple statement that reflected a possible oversight. However my bad - you did say the crossovers were internal, hence matched speakers.
