It depends where you are.
In the middle and other right spots it's reinforcement. Move a 1/4 wavelength either side & it's cancellation.

I had 8 10's like your second design, sounded great, now my honda has 2 11" subs facing each other about 7" apart, no problem, so long as they are the same model, same frequency, same signal strength.

No it won't cause cancellations of any appreciable nature unless you wire the subs out of phase. Go for it.
