rs operating range has gone downhill

I've got an Avital 5303 installed in my 2000 Subaru Outback. Has worked fine for 2 years. Recently, the receiving range has gone to almost 20 feet. Previously was excellent. I've inspected all the antenna wiring, new battery in the remote. And moved the antenna a couple of inches lower, away from the funky tint near the rear view mirror. I've read all of the BS about adding a wire, foil, raising the transmitter to your head. Not interested in any of those types of things.2000 Subaru OBW Ltd

A) the remote is going out. B) the antenna is going out. Either of these is a likely cause. You could try using your spare remote if you have one. If range is better then it's the remote. If not then it's the antenna.Gary Sather

Yes, what tonanzinth said. If you can find a friend with a similar system, see if you can try your antenna in his car, or his in yours. (You'll need some two-sided tape to reinstall the antennas after this.) DEI makes both a short, stubby antenna, and another style that's a square block with a long skinny rod coming out of it. I think the long one is supposed to have a little more range....their literature is a little confusing. At any rate, they both have the same connector and should both work for testing purposes. Worst-case resort: Find a local Avital dealer, ask what a replacement antenna would cost, but ask if you can test it in your car before purchase. (If you give him your old antenna, he can probably get away with swapping it out under his warranty, and hopefully only charge you something reasonable.)
