I just got a Clifford 3105x and was told by the salesman that I need a bitwriter. When I asked him why I needed one all he did was smile and say I needed it. OK so what is a bitwriter why would I need one and what does it do? This might be basic but it would help to know.
Thank You

It's a programming tool, frankly you can program most things manually, it's only needed for specialised timing functions depending on your vehicle which since you haven't told us what it is I've no way of saying yes or no to you getting one.
Look at the quick reference guide in the Clifford box, first section of the guide are the functions that only the bitwriter can program. If you think you need these for your vehicle then layout the approx. $100 for one.

Aside from the special timing / temps & icons options, the BitWriter is mandatory for making changes if the unit was "locked" by the previous installer with a BitWriter.  I have heard of some re-furb units shipped that way.  And call me lazy, but the BitWriter is way easier than using the remotes.   What is a bitwriter and do I need one? -- posted image.
Soldering is fun!

The simple answer is to do your install, use manual programming then see if you need a Bitwriter. You shouldn't on that vehicle.
Though if I can remember that far back you will probably need a DEI 451 lock module.
