Hi folks,

This is a GREAT forum.  I've been stuck on here for 3 days straight now studying before I go wreck my car with a whole boat load of goodies.  Here's a question for all you experts though......

I'm making a new console to house my head unit. (the factory unit was a funky shape and I hate the cheap "bestbuy" plastic adapter). After I make the new piece out of fiberglass, how would you suggest making it look like the rest of the dash? Is there some kind of textured spray that you suggest, or is it more complicated than that. I don't really want to repaint the whole dash unless I have to.

Thanks,

Dave

Oh, and if it helps, the car is a 97 SC2.

what you should do and it would be easier is buy that best buy crap peice and glass over that than paint it. that way there is no mold to make and it is stronger and better than it was before.
what kind of car?????

mecp certification is not always needed. I have it and it has not helped me out at all. my experience out shines it.

Hi Jon,

I actually have that POS from best buy and planned on glassing over it ;-)  See, the problem is the best buy item leaves a nasty gap around the head that makes it look cheap.  I planned on mounting the head in such a way that it's flush mounted with the dash, as opposed to sticking out 3/4"...hence the need to custom build it.

It's a 97 Saturn SC2 with a charcoal grey dash.

Thanks,

Dave

Maybe I should clarify a little better.......... I was wondering what kind of finish to put on it after it's been molded as opposed to how to shape it to look like the original.

If you are trying to match the dash texture you are probibly best to speak to a company that deals with vinul repairs, i had some cuts in my door trim and had them repaired by a company named fibrenew, they melted new vinul to the panel and stamped the original dash pattern (turtlecracks) into the new vinul to match the rest of the interior. they may have some idea on how to get a speckled effect if this is what you are trying to accomplish. Cheers

You can try a texture paint made by sem, while it may not be an exact matching texture it will blend in with the rest of the dash texture. You can find it at autobody supply shops.
