Longtime reader, first time posting (I think) so I will do my best to not be excessive and try to still sound sincere when simplifying things. To mods, senior users I am grateful to all feedback and suggestions, I will take considerations seriously. Also anything against rules or policy is unintentional so please inform immediately for correction. Lastly, in a short time when I know the post has been made correctly I will edit and remove this into, thank you all.
I have two reverse projects involving relays and switches, one is a backup camera on my RV second are parking sensors for my car.
My RV is a class A 1988 Corsair Sovereign, made by General Coach based on GM's P30 platform with a carburated 454 and Th400 transmission. I am installing a generic cube reverse camera, using a 2.4 ghz transmitter for video feed both being powered from the backup lights. 44 ft forward the reciever will be connected to a generic overlayed rearview mirror with built in 4.3 inch monitor, both will be supplied power from either a new or piggybacked Acc. Source at the interior fuse box. The monitor is triggered when receiving a video source and the send unit and camera will turn on with the reverse lights.
I want to have a switch to manually turn on the camera at will but also keep the traditional function of powering on with reverse.
There are ways to add a switch at the sacrifice of one function and a couple ways to have both if I replace transmitters with video cable.
I think I figured out how to add my switch, retain reverse signal and wireless using a 5 pin (SPDT) relay. I think I know how to wire it but I really would appreciate confirmation of my layout, I will take in other ideas that offer the same function.
I need to find the wire that supplies the lights with power After being put in reverse, I assume this feed to be void of power until the gear is selected. I figure I take a 5 Pin relay (30 feed, 85 -, 86 +, 87a N/o, 87 N/c)
I cut before mentioned wire, connect end coming from reverse switch to 87a
Connect the other end of the wire going to the lights to 30
Connect a fused power source with switch inline to 86
Connect a ground feed to 85
Connect a fused power source to 87
This should allow the tail lights receive power anytime the RV is in reverse thus turning on the camera and monitor as the source will travel through the relay uninterrupted 87a to 30. Now anytime I am in anything other than reverse I can turn on my switch to power the coil at 86, providing power to 30 and the lights by way of 87.
The sources going to 86 and 87 are to be fused Acc. Sources so I cant see any problems this could cause if anyone does, please let me know.
I would be comfortable with this setup but ask for feedback as to my alternative connections.
To simplify things would it be possible for the switched source to connect to 86 and 87? Providing the signal to power the coil and then also power the lights? I dont know for certain if this is possible or safe, confirmation to this and my layout is much appreciated.
Second I have a 2002 Hyundai Sonata, it has an aftermarket touchscreen with a backup camera, powered by the reverse lights and displayed after the same power goes to a trigger wire on the head unit. The camera is fine however, I plan to install parking sensors In the bumper set to turn on when in reverse. I want a switch to be able to turn them off or keep them on to work when ever I am backing up.
Normally powered by tapping onto reverse wires just like the cameras this setup has me running + from the light source to 30
The + line from the sensor module connects to 87a
85 goes to a ground
A fused power source (likely from a fuse tap) runs through a simple on off switch and connects to 86 on the relay
87 left with no connection.
When in reverse the relay feeds power through to the module and should I not need or desire the extra help I turn on the switch to energize the coil and power from the light goes no where.
I'm looking again mostly for confirmation that these setups are indeed correct and safe. I'm certain that I use fused sources and I'm fine, I am also certain that a positive power feed can safely go nowhere, any confirmation is invaluable to me.
I began self taught and through books and guidance I try to always educate myself, so if I come off redundant to some this is why. Again to the mods, any feedback to the structure, length , content of my post is welcomed.
