I have a 60s era head unit with a common ground - there are only 3 speaker wires, with the (-) of both tied to ground , as is the (-) power). I want to add an amp and would like to know the best method for doing this since modern amps have a floating ground.

If you are talking about connecting the OEM radio to an aftermarket amplifier with floating ground inputs, simply connect the left and right wires from the radio to the amplifier left and right positive input wires and then ground both of the amplifier negative input wires.

If you are wondering how to connect the amplifier to a common ground speaker system, you will have to run wires to each speaker.
