Can you identify this?

Please help me identify this mystery black box.  It has switched power and ground going into it, and then out of it to the radio.  The only markings on it are the letters HDE and two arrows both pointing towards the radio.

I just finally pulled this radio from my 1984 Jeep CJ-7.  As you can see the wiring by previous owner was a mess.  Am replacing with an Alpine head unit.  Just want to know if this black box serves a purpose and if I might need some sort of similar device with my new setup.

My only thought was it might be a big capacitor to store energy for better bass or something.

It's an inline noise filter. I haven't seen one of those in a while ;)

BTW, I'd leave it on there or at least keep it handy. You may find that you need it after you install the radio.
