Hi-  I've recently finished constructing a closed-box enclosure with 2 10" drivers (4 ohm) and want to wire up a passive crossover for it.  Being this is my first box, I have a couple questions: 1) Do I need a certain type of inductor/capacitor or will any type do, provided I use 'the right' Henry/Farad values?  2) What's the methodology for determining the crossover frequency?  How do I find this before I spend the cash for the inductor(s) and capacitor(s)?  THanks for any insight you my have.  -Tim

Yes and no.

First, how do you plan to wire the subs to the amp? If you plan to simply hook each speaker straight to one channel of the amp, that is one thing; but if you plan to wire the speakers in series or parallel to a single channel, that is two more things.

Also, what frequency do you want the sub crossed over at? What frequencies do you want the sub to play? For 10's, that can be anywhere from 50Hz to 200Hz, although you prolly don't want to use either. A good point could be 80Hz to 120Hz.

Also, do you want a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd order crossover. How sharply do you want the crossover to reject frequencies above your crossover point?

Answer these questions, and we will see if we can answer yours better.
