I've got a 2000 Camero with a halfway decent factory stereo system except for a busted speaker in the passenger door. It is a 5 1/4" speaker with a built in tweeter. It has four wires going to it - two to the woofer part of the speaker and two going to the tweeter (center cone).

I have not been able to find an aftermarket speaker like this and you know what the dealer is going to do to me if I go there for one.

I'd really like to replace them with a regular full range speaker but I don't know what I'd do with all four wires. Can I tie the two + wires together and the two - wires together and solder them to a regular speaker??? Or will I really screw up something??? If I can do this, what ohm speaker should I use? As my questions indicate you are dealing with a really audio challenged person here.

go into crutchfield, and go to the what fits my car..and bam you have instant choices...then you search stores and the net for cheaper prices..

First off as far as ohms go you'll use a 4 ohm speaker. 99% of all 5 1/4" car speakers are 4 ohm so you'll have no trouble finding one. Second I would try to trace the two sets of wires back to see if you can find some sort of factory installed crossover, or to find if they are two seperate channels running from an internal amp. If there's a crossover, just bypass it and you should have a full range of sound running to your aftermarket speaker. If it's two seperate channels of an amp, do not bridge them, you can never bridge from a factory source. In that instance just take the channel which was run to the cone of the speaker and use that.
