My friend had an amp given to him (a Rockford Fosgate Series 1 460SD), which is a 30 watt x 4 channel amplifier.  We tried hookin it up yesterday, and after at least 5 hours, we put the negative terminal back on.  The amp turned on immediately, even though the car was off, and a popping sound came out of the speakers.  Then, we smelled smoke coming from the amp or somewhere near it.  I think that we might've hooked the amp up wrong, because he's hooking the amp up to his mp3 player, and not to a deck.  For the remote turn on lead we used the "switched 12V+" wire (he has a 84 Plymouth Relient, and we got the wiring diagram from this site).  I don't have any idea what could be wrong, and it's kinda hard to understand because of all of the things that could go wrong, but do you guys have any idea what's happenning? or what could be going wrong? We're using 12 GA power wire with a 30A fuse, and 18GA speaker wire.  Thanks a Lot.

You let the genie out. Do you know if the amplifier worked prior to the installation? Are you sure that you had the power and ground hooked up correctly to the amplifier?

You might also want to double check that the remote isnt wired to a constant power source.

I was told that the amp was in full working order. I double checked the .pdf users manual that I have and I believe that the power and ground are set up correctly. I connected the remote turn on lead to what was labeled ad "switched 12v+" which seems to be the correct wire. What would happen if my remote turn on were connect to a constant power? It wouldn't have any adverse affects accept that the amp would turn on all the time, correct? Also, what would make the burning smell from my amp? I don't understand why this would happen, because it is wired correctly. thanks

Even if the remote was a constant source of power that wouldn't have caused the amp to smoke. If the power and ground where backwards it would blow the amp the second power was hooked up. Did it blow the fuse?

The fuse is fine, we double checked everything. The positive line and the ground were in the correct slots. We also found the appropriate switched line so that the amp only turned on when the key was turned. It didn't actually smoke, just after being on for a minute or two there was a noticable smell. Today when we tried, the CD was playing, but only a slight crackling came from the right speaker. When i took the key out, both of the speakers magnets turned off and the cones relaxed out, so the amp is doing something, i just don't know what.... any thoughts??? thanks

what's the output on the headphone jack? most decks have a 2volt preout.. maybe that has something to do with the lack of volume... as for the smell, could be dust on the board. kinda like when your baseboard heater turns on after a few months of gathering dust? series 1 amps date back a few years...

do any of your friends have systems? you could try hooking up your amp to their wiring and seeing if the same thing happens... i dunno, sounds like you got hosed though. good luck

also, if it turned on with the car off, you definately tagged the wrong accessory wire...

use a multimeter (or test light) and find a wire that only gives power with key in acc. and on positions... worst case, you could put a switch in - but most people end up forgetting to turn it off and get a dead battery for their troubles

I have it hooked up to the switched 12v now, that's fine. The dust thing makes sense, it's sat around for awhile. Any idea what voltage a discman puts out? What would be a possible way of boosting the power out of my headphone port so that i can use my discman or mp3 player instead of buying a deck. Thanks
