i understand that grounds are necessary when installing electrical but the question i have.......(and this may be really dumb to ask but f**k it)....how do they work and why are they necessary......like the car is attached to a piece of metal....so what????

Well, all the ground is basically conecting to is back to the battery if I am not mistaken. The negative terminal of the battery goes right to the conductable chasis of the car. So, when you ground something, it's basically like completing the circuit.
Instead of running a second wire back to the battery, your using the chasis.
My explanation may/may not be correct but that's the way I figure it.

Thats about all there is to it.   The ground is pretty much the same as the negative terminal. There are some foreign cars that are wired positive ground, but there's not too many of them around.
