noise maker location

in my 96 honda accord (i have noticed that in many passenger cars also)underneath the trunk liner, on both sides of the trunk, there are 2 rectangular boxes in the shape of a vent with a rubber membrane. when the bass hits there is an unusual rattle coming from the sides of the car. in mine there is no metal that is not covered by dynamat or somekind of sound deadning material, there are no loose plastic pannels neither, nor the license plate loose.   i found this odd; and took the rectangles out of the car...the annoying rattle stopped. my question is if anybody knows what are the adverse reactions to the trunk not having this contraption on? and what is it for? your help would be greatly appreciated. TIAIt's better to ask a "STUPID" question...than to know a "STUPID" answer. :-)

Those things are usually some sort of vent to help equalize air pressure in the car with the outside air and provide a little ventilation to the interior. I had strange noises coming from the back door pillars in my Tahoe and I found a similar type of device. I removed them and sealed the holes with some duct tape and dynamat and the noise stopped. I don't see any reason why there would be any harm in removing them.

thanks... i had the same problem with a dodge durango, but the client wasn't as concerned as i am about their function...so we ripped them out...and the noise did stop however. so i think i'll do the same and keep them out for good. It's better to ask a "STUPID" question...than to know a "STUPID" answer. :-)
