hi, i just installed a fosgate punch 401s amp it's rated at: 100 W X 2 @ 4 Ohms RMS
    200 W X 2 @ 2 Ohms RMS
    400 W X 1 @ 4 Ohms Bridged RMS
i bridged it and connected it to a JL w3 dual voice coil 6 ohms. i got the sub in parallel and it's at 3 ohms. i notice my amp is getting really hot, am i hooking it up wrong?

The reason the amp is getting hot is because the lowest independence you can go bridged mono is 4ohms. If you wire it in parallel http://www.audiobahninc.com/tech/wiring/parallel_parallel_dual_6.pdf you will have a 3 ohm load. Your best bet would be not to bridge the subs, run it in a 2 channel configuration. Wire each voice coil to (1) of your amps channels. This won’t give you quite as much power but it’s the only way to get the max out of your amp with out overloading it

crichols82 if you were to have a 12 ohm load that would mean that you had it wired in series http://www.audiobahninc.com/tech/wiring/Series_Series_dual_6_ohm.pdf
