Is the any way for the average guy like myself to tell how many watts my amp is actually putting out. All these companys say this and that, but do they really make that much power? I have a MA Audio hc4002 sitting in my garage that claims 4000 watts into a 1 ohm load. I have a hard time believing that since it only has 4 awg power and ground hookup's. Any help?

Yea, that's a bridged mono rating at 1 ohm load, 14.4v and 1% THD, but what you'd actually get if you really push it that hard is some incredibly high distortion more like 10%. That's the trade-off for running high-current amps at or near their limits.

4 AWG wire, teflon coated, can handle around 125 amps. Standard plastic coating, the rating drops to 105 amps.

HOW TO CHECK RMS WITH VOLTAGE METER

Set the MM to A/C voltage....play some tunes and watch peak voltage....square this then divide that number by the impedance load. This gives a close idea of the RMS that the amp is putting out.

Some amps can do what they claim and more. I have had good luck with soundstream producing a bit more than what they are rated at. I think you get what you pay for.

When you day play some tunes, do you mean any volume or the volume that it's at when i'm out on a saturday night? Thanks again for the info guys.

Soundstream is notorious for under rating their products. I currently own a Class A 5.2 and a Class A 10.2. The 5.2 is rated at 50wx2 into 4ohm stereo.... once you get to 1ohm mono it will hit 500... that is soundstream says 500. I have read many places that say higher. I have seen 600 in some magazines, and I'd have to agree. The 10.2 is the same just double the power.

The 2 SPL 15s I have are also only rated at 400watts, but I've seen guys run them with around 800 a piece and they love it.

First of all to make a amp 4000 wattes you need two run three batteries in the trunk a 210 amp alternater and a real good battery isolater. run 0 gauge all the way through. Hook up a distribution block 36 inches from the amp to bring it down to 4 gauge. Make sure you check volt's are at 14 when playing. Also see what the amp rating on the amp is before doing so. The amp should at least pull 300 amps.
