I want to make a custom fiberglass enclosure for my 99 Civic Coupe. After reading all of the posts about cutom enclosures, i assume that you have to remove the box to sand and finish it. I want my box to house 3 10" Memphis HP series DVC and 2 12" HP DVC. The box would have to wrap around the trunk to achieve this. I have never done any kind of custom building, however I have worked with glass on a limited basis on boat bottoms. How would I go about building a frame and glassing the box? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, would it make any sense to have 3 10" subs and 2 12" subs? I have the 3 10" subs in the car now, and they hit great, but I want to add that deep 12" bass also. Would they cancel each others sound out?

i would go with stick with the 10's or just get 2 or 4 12's. because if you take a look at all the comp. systems, you notice very seldom they combine different size subs. it would all depend on how your subs were placed to cancle each other out. you could move the 10's up towards the cab and the 12's in the far back

this should guide all the way   http://ccs.exl.info/frame_installation.html

The 12's would over power the 10's and cancellation may happen depending on how the subs would be facing. Try to stick with one size of subwoofer. You have to decide how many subs you want to get the total volume correct. What you will have to do is make a mold of the trunk ( remove the spare tire ) and frame the upper protion of the mold with MDF. Fiberglass the mold and the frame together and remove and start to add layers to thicken up the mold. Now that you have the lower protion done you can make MDF trim rings and attach them in the shape that you want. Make your self a frame that is the same shape and size as your frame on the spare tire mold. Attach the rings to the frame that you made with steel straping and wrap with a fleece or T-shirt material tight around the outside. Fiberglass resin this fleece/T-shirt material and then start glassing it. When you have about 4-6 layers on it, take a 2x2 peice of wood that is the depth of the enclosure and attach it to the bottom of the top piece and set it inside the bottom half of the enclosure for rigidity. Use silicone and super glue to connect the top and the bottom pieces together and glass the seam for air tight seal. Finish with bondo and sanding and prime & paint or carpet/vinyl.

Depending on the cu.ft.  I pefer this method.  Put masking tape over the area you wish to glass.  Once the tape is laid out.  Take a sharpie and mark where you will need to cut for the back of the enclosure.  You will notice that the marking will show through.  Lay up about 2-3 layers of glass.  Pop out the mold.  Cut along the line and smooth out.   I like the use 2x4's for bracing and also when you fabricate the rings dont cut the hole out.  Use the whole disc for bracing.  Everything is like the above.

I wanted the 3 tens to be facing the rear of the car, and the 2 twelves to be on either side of the trunk facing each other. I don't know enough about sound frequencies, or whatever I need to know about cancelling each other out. I still don't get about making the enclosure though. I take it I would have to make each side/bottom seperately and than secure them all together within the trunk. I am starting to get an idea about how to make the mold for the enclosure. Thanks for your posts.

What do you think Memphis is? I have heard alot of different size speakers, by different manufacturers, including the companies you have listed, and none sound as good or have bass that hits as nicely. The only speakers I have ever listen to that compare are the Alpine Type R's. I am definitely going to stay with the Memphis.

well if memphis is that good and u have 3 10s and im thinking ur running them at their recommended rms then that should be enough bass in a civic without 2 more 12s.
And i have to strongly disagree with u saying that memphis is the best and alpine type rs are close. Have u heard eclipse or rockford fosgate Hx2s or powers?

Yes I have heard them, and I still say Memphis is better. I don't think I have ever heard someone say they have enough bass though. My system is extremely loud, and it sounds great. The only reason I want the 12's is to add that deep bass to the sound. My 10's hit great, and have are really loud, but as you know 10's are more punchy bass. I just want the 10's to hit hard, as they do, and for the 12's to carry the bass. All I was asking in the post is if it is too much to have to design a setup where the bass won't cancel each other out. Besides, Rockford Fosgate has become the no-frills brand speaker. there was a time when you could only by them at specialty car-audio shops, know you can purchase them at any store that has electronics pretty much. I'm not saying that they probably don't sound good in a nice setup, I'm just tired of hearing that they are the best and not hearing a system that makes me turn my head.

I dont think RF is great but with the cancellation there shouldnt be any if you have a bass control on your amps. ive seen systems with diff size subs and they dont sound distorted in any way
