OK, here's my problem.

   There's a performance shop with a 1989 Ferrari Mondial t cabriolet sitting out front. The shop has asked me to come up with an alternator upgrade for the car in anticipation of a future stereo system.

   The owner is apparently a cheapo. He won't go for a Wrangler or other aftermarket high output unit.

   The car currently has a 60A Delco unit. I looked it over but didn't note the numbers off the housing. I'm thinking he could run a more powerful Delco alternator, such as a unit from a GM truck or commercial application.

   Does anybody have any experience with Ferrari's here? I'll be honest - it's my first Ferrari job. I don't know off the top of my head what fits in there, and any idiosyncracies of Ferrari electrical systems.

   Any help would be appreciated.

All I can say is GOOD LUCK !! That's an expensive car ( even if it's a 1989 ) to mess around with. I saw an ad on the internet for a used alternator off a Ferrari and the guy was asking $ 600 US for it Ferrari alternator -- posted image.!! If the guy wants genuine Ferrari parts, I hope he's got the cash to go with it Ferrari alternator -- posted image.

Delco housings are very common. Lestek uses them as well as other companies.
Talk to a starter and alternator shop and give the guy there the casing numbers on the alternator. He'll be able to cross-reference that and tell you what he can do.
re-wind it, change the guts, etc.
El Cheapo, Ferrari, and hopped-up alternator do not belong in the same sentence.
If he won't spend $300-400 on an alternator he sure as hell isn't going to spend the money required for a stereo to use that size alternator.
Tell him to stick with a Spark-o-matic and some 5x7 Jensens. Maybe an equalizer-booster from radio shack too.

   Thansk guys. I knew from the beginning that I'd probably have to "slap him into reality" regarding alternator prices and the cost of quality work on an expensive car. Believe me, I am not going to drop a penny off the price for this guy.

   If he can afford a Ferrari, he can afford top quality service too. He'll get it. I'm not about to make concessions just so i can say I did a Ferrari.

   I've considered the rewinding route as well. What's the max increase you guys have seen from rewinding alternators? Honestly, I've never dealt with that solution, as my usual answer was a  simply a higher output unit.

that reeeaaally depends on the casing and alternator.
the one in my Jeep comes in a range from 70 to 165 amps, but it's the same casing they use in the Cummins Deisel turbo trucks and fully loaded Durangos.
Some can't be rewound any higher than they already are.
Honestly though, tell him if he thinks you're steep, to call up any starter&alternator shop and ask them for pricing. He'll see that you're fair.
I always invite people to shop around, then when they find something a few bucks cheaper, to consider if they trust the other guy, and if the quality of work is as good.
People are usually willing to pay a little bit more for quality.
You can see that in this guy just by the fact he bought a Ferrari instead of say, a Mercedes or a BMW. Slightly different class of car there.
