When do I need a capacitor?

My system is 500 watts, use to drive 2 subs. Do I need a cap?

you usually only need a cap when you're straining your electrical system.........if your headlights or interior lights dim when the bass kicks.....its a good indication that you need a cap or a high output alternator......but new alternators cost a lot......if you're only runnin 500 watts you should be fine unless you have a really old car that cant handle it..........

Caps stores power and are very effective when you are trying to get the most out of your amp for short periods of time. If your lights are dimming a cap will not help, as it is believed. An upgrade to your alternator is normally the solution when you want to run your system over a long period of time and still maintain maximum efficiency from your amp.

I always think having atleast one cap is a good idea.  It will always keep continuous power going to the amp and will not be putting such a load on the battery
