97' Jetta Keyless Entry Question

Hey guys, I usually stick the audio forum, seeing as how I have no knowledge at all about car security.  Heres my problem: I have a 97' VW Jetta that originally had a keyless entry. When I bought the car, the owner had lost the keyless, and I have to unlock the car with the key.  I contacted my local VW dealer, and all they could tell me was that it would cost about 180 dollars for a replacement.  I just wanted to know if there are any other alternatives...i.e. progammable remotes or anything I can do to get a keyless entry without having to dish out the 180 bucks.  Any ideas?       I found my friend the lexus key-remote on e-bay for 25 bucks you may want to try them.. Are you could buy a remote start with keyless entry combo. For it is about the same price for just a keyless entry...

There are two different Keyless systems for the AIII VW's. The first generation being an add on Module to the Factory alarm system. It came with a two button remote. It can be identified by the presence of a small black box direcectly attached to the Factory Alarm Module located behind the light switch. (Remove Blank plate to the left of headlight switch with a screw driver, Light Switch will then remove by depressing a small spring loaded clip at the top right of the switch). The thin rectangular box that is about 4"X5" is the alarm module. Look the black module attached to that unit. If you have this system unfortunately there are no parts now available for this unit. They have been discontinued. The new system uses a four button remote that is shaped much like a key. It is found on 98 or newer Golf III and Jetta III's. It can be retrofitted to any '93-'98 Golf or Jetta. The 98+ module goes for around $200-$300 CDN. It is not compatible with the older system. Installation is as simple as plugging it into the existing harness for the older module. The remotes for this system run around $45 CDN from the dealer. The program  sequence for the remote is very simple. You need two keys. Place one in the ignition and turn it to the run position(do not start the vehicle) Place the second key into the drivers side door and turn the key to the unlock position and hold until the alarm beeps the horn. allow the key to return to the neutral position but do not remove. Push any button on the remote. The system will respond with a horn beep to acknowledge the remote. If you have a second remote push any button again and this system will respond with two beeps. You can program upto four remotes to the vehicle with this process. Once all remotes have been acknowledged turn the key in the door to the unlock position again until the System gives a horn beep to close the programming mode. There are two remotes that look very much the same for VW's one is made by Hella, marked  on the back of the remote and costs about $120 CDN from the dealer and the other which is marked Clarion. You need the Clarion remote for this system which costs about $45/ea CDN.
