Poor radio FM reception

I have installed an aftermarket HU in my car and the FM radio reception is poor to say the least. I triple checked the antenna cable and it is firmly connected at the HU and antenna. The Cd player works fine.The car has a trunk mounted (non powered) antenna. Is there a way I can improve the reception?
