i just read a thread on clublexus about possibly losing the factory sub when you install a new head unit because you might have to bypass the factory amp(?)...

http://www.clublexus.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=99704

please tell me if the following scenerio is; possible? bad? good? idiotic?

first, this is all taking place in a 1993 LS400...

orignally, i was planning on installing an Alpine CDA-7995 head unit, and powering a 12" JL Audio by bridging a 150W 2-channel Lightning Audio amp.  how much (for better or worse) will my 12" or factory 8"sub be affected if i run both subs off the same 2-channel amp (each with their own channel of course)?  i imagine if i max out  the factory 8", the 12" will be MUCH lower than it could be, but by how much do you think?  would it be enough that i negate the purpose of the 12"?

or, should i just screw the factory sub and run the 12" bridged?

i read through that post and couldn't figure out where it was said HOW to continue using the factory sub on a new head unit (although people claim to have).  if i have to blueprint and trace the factory wiring to figure it out i'd rather (for now) find a quick fix in either scenerio i've listed above.

THANKS,

d

IMO ditch the factory sub for now, if you don't cross over the factory and the 12 they will interfere with each other.

i think you should just tear out the factory sub and use it as some where to mount an amp, the stock sub will never work properly with another sub unless you cross them over and in that case you would want to get a better quality sub anyways.

I hope you have another amp(s) to power the internal speakers. The Alpine CDA-7995 does not have an internal amplifier. That headunit requires external amps for all speakers.

I have a '90 LS400. Dump the factory sub, it sucks. It's a free air (no enclisure) sub mounted in the rear deck. I'm having mine removed today as all my stuff is being installed. You need that opening where the factory sub was for your sub in the trunk to pass thru bass. The LS400 gas tank actually runs up behind the rear seats so you need to get that factory sub out of there.

Trust me on the CDA-7995 (I'm running one in my Explorer) Factory 8'' sub and 12'' sub off same Amp? - Last Post -- posted image.
Here's a link to Alpine's specs on it. You'll need the Kenwood amp, so make sure to configure that into your installation (power requirements, wiring to headunit and speakers, etc...)

Here is one idea that might interest you...
If the amp has two channels, run the 8inch with a cap/coil to cut out aroud 120 Hz, which will still give it some use and run the 12inch on the other channel for below 120Hz (the amp should have a low/high pass knob).
HOWEVER, if you are after BIG sound, using a good driver (I'm assuming the 12inch is), than you can not beat bridging the two channels....
