I'm looking into several systems and I notice some say that they include relays for the power door locks and some just say (+/-), which I assume that it means they connect directly without relays.

Are relays for power door locks necessary? If so, why? What kind of prevention?

The systems that say (+/-) only have positive and negative outputs. So with this type of system, if your vehicle has reverse polarity door locks, then you would still need relays. Some systems only have low current negative outputs designed only to trigger relays, and a few systems come with standard relays onboard to cover all types of door locks.
So relays are only necessary in order to create enough current to trigger the factory door lock actuators. In some cases you are triggering the factory relays, so technically you could get away with a lower current output, but it is always wise to use relays.

Sweet! Thanks for the info. I assume I could just get the basic relays they sell in autoparts store? I'm not sure if they require a certain type of relay?

What vehicle do you have?
You need a Standard 30 Amp Automotive relay (SPDT)
