What is the rule of thumb when trying to determine the right fuse rating for a component? 20 % over the rating.

Thanks.

If you use ohms law https://www.the12volt.com/ohm/ohmslaw.asp you can calculate the correct fuse size. watts divided by volts = amps, so if you have 1000 watts rms and a voltage of 12.8 you will be drawing 78.125 or 78 amps. So you would need a fuse of 80 amps for 1000 watts rms. You can use the 12 volts calculator ( I = P / E ) https://www.the12volt.com/ohm/page2.asp . Also you should never overrate a fuse. The fuse needs to be as close to the current draw as possible to correctly protect the component(s).
