I just had a clifford Matrix rsx 3.5 remote start and alarm installed a day ago. It was professionally installed by an authorized dealer. My problem is when I remote start it it only stays on for about 1 minute or so and shuts down. I brought it back the same day,  the installer did some things that were recommended by clifford/DEI he still couldn't get it to work unfortunately he was about to close his shop so I have to go back this friday 11/21. Also when I remote start it I had the installer hook it up so the rear defroster will go on it kicks on maybe 5 to 10 seconds after the engine is remote started. I think he did it with a relay. I dont Know if that has anything to do with it. The only other options installed were the trunk pop the horn honking output when alarm is triggered and a 507t digital/tilt motion sensor. I dont know if any of these options has anything to do with it but if anyone can tell me what it might be maybe i could recommend any info provided to the installer on Friday. Thanks to all in advance.

Well, I would think that the installer would know this, but it sounds like a problem with the bypass (hopefully they used a bypass module). Doesn't the 2003 have PATS?

Yes it does have a pats II system.( I gave him an extra key for remote start)  I dont know if it is possible to bypass the factory alarm with out a bypass kit but he did specifically tell me that the factory alarm was bypassed. That all I nedded was my one remote (Clifford). Come to think of it he gave me an itemized bill which listed all my options and prices for those options on my receipt but there is nothing listed or charged on it for a bypass kit. So like I said I dont know if its possible to do it without a bypass kit.  Anyone know if it has been done before if so maybe he used this method instead of the bypass kit and that could be the problem? Ayone have any thoughts?  Thanks

I would not do anything yourself since it will void you warranty with the shop.  You can ask him to try and remote start the vehicle with the key in the ignition, not on just sitting there.  If the car remotes starts and stays on then the bypass module is not hooked up correctly.  Also a problem could be with a tach wire in order to remote start and stay on the system needs to see a specific voltage on the tach wire it is even hooked up.  The RSX 3.5 can be used in voltage sense (tachless mode) instead but it does not work on all domestic vehicles.  I would ask him if he used a tach wire or voltage sense, a quick try with the key in the ignition would be simple, plus setting the alarm for voltage sense is very quick and simple, but AGAIN I WOULD NOT DO ANYTHNING YOURSELF CAUSE IT COULD VOID YOUR WARRANTY.  I know that at least were I work people screw with problems all the time and all it does is let the installer off the hook, you paid for it let them fix it.

Sounds like the tach wire to me. Make sure you ask him to use the ignition coils as his tach signal. Also, the truck has to be at it's lowest idle speed before attepmting to do a tach learn.

Everyone is missing the answer on this one....
What button on the remote are you using to start the vehicle? Are you pressing lock/unlock together or hitting the * button? You need to use the * button, and you might need to hit it twice about 1 second apart. Hitting lock/unlock together activates the short run time which is preset at 1 minute. This is different then the old RSX 3 system, and the installer probably just started using the 3.5's and doesn't know about that new setting.

JWorm I am hitting the * button 2 times as you specified also my installer asked me the same question he wanted to make sure I was using the * button instead of hitting lock/unlock together. I am bringing it back to the installer on Friday and I will ask him about the tach wire I will also try putting the key in the ignition and then trying to remote start it as Kenmci has said. Thank you guys for your input I am not going to attempt anything myself I just wanted to get an idea of what it could be so I could tell the installer to check these things you guys have recommended although being an installer he should know what to check, but anyway I will post the outcome to this problem on friday hopefully he will have solved it by then. Thanks again everyone.

I tried to remote start it with the key just sitting in the ignition as Kenmci has stated to do and it did not start but it tried to start I can here the relays clicking to attempt to start  so I am assuming the bypass kit is properly installed. But the funny thing is when I pulled the key out of the ignition the car remotely started and stayed on for about 12 minutes which is the default setting on the limit the engine will run before it shuts off does this make any sense? Because when I remote started it again without the key in the ignition and then pulling it out it only stood on for 1 minute which is my original problem. Anyone know why?

Your installer used a transponder bypass module, so that when you remote start the car with the key in the ignition, the car "see's" 2 keys,  and goes into theft mode.  This is normal. The problem your having is most definetly tach related.

avxtech... not entirely true some ford models will read two keys at the same time the explorer is one of them, except in the 04 they no longer will read two keys.
