TFT is a none active matrix screen. Meaning it's viewing angel is very slim.
ie. You must be pretty much on centre to view the images.
The other one allows the viewer to be off centre more so before the picture either disappears, or the screen whites out.
The newer model laptops now include wide angel screens, which almost mimmic the viewing angle of a regular tube style TV.
You get what you pay for...

Normally, there are various types of LCD's. STN, DSTN, TFT, and many other types of LCD's are available for different kinds of applications. TFT's offer best viewing angle, brightness, and contrast ratio. The most distinctive difference between STN and TFT is the viewing angle.

A common TFT LCD screen has a viewing angle of L/R 60 degree; Up 15 degre; Down 25 degree, while a STN less than 15 degree in all direction. The difference coming next is the color, the color of a TFT is sharp, bright and real. The Industry called TFT true color while STN false color.

Jeff, is correct. It is the other way around, sorry for the mistake on that. The technical difference is below discribing the two verions.
Passive Matrix
This type of screen is less expensive than an active matrix screen, but is not as bright or rich in color. The lower cost makes a passive matrix screen ideal for routine office tasks. A passive matrix screen is also called a Double SuperTwisted Nematic (DSTN) screen.
Passive matrix screens can be difficult to read when viewed from an angle. This is ideal when want to keep work private from people sitting next to you on a train or plane, but makes delivering a presentation to several people difficult.
Active Matrix
This type of screen is more expensive, but displays brighter, richer colors than a passive matrix screen. An active matrix screen is also called a Thin-Film Transistor (TFT) screen.
You can view an active matrix screen from wide angles, which makes it more suitable for delivering presentations to several people.
