Hi folks,

I was hoping that someone (possibly an installer) who has had a bit of experience with 2 way paging systems might be able to give me an idea of what make/model demonstrates the best overall range in a typical real world setting.  In my case that would be in a small city with just a few (15 or so) large buildings.

The unit will be for my GF who has to walk about 1 mile to her car from work.

At this point I am pretty confused since there appears to be little truth in advertising with regard to actual operating distance.

The three units that seem to be most promising to me are Lynx 2000, Ultrastart 4500 and the Compustar with spread spectrum technology.

With regard to the Lynx 2000 (2004 model) with advertised 2 mile range - does anyone have any experience with this model?  Are the claims close to truthful?

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and experience, Mike

The Lynx 2000R does have great range compared to the other two systems. I have installed all 3 systems and as far as the range is concerned, the Lynx and the Ultra Start's have pretty good ranges. The Ultra Start had about a 3 block range ( city blocks ) for the customer that I installed for and the Lynx has about 4 blocks. The CompuStar had about 2 - 3 depending on the area and the building around. The stated range of 2 miles from Lynx I think is a bit inflated seeing that it would have to be a non - FCC rated system to have that kind of range.

Thank you Velocity Motors - the information you provided is very helpful.

Asianwolf offers an "international" version of the Lynx which claims 2 mile range.  Perhaps this version is not FCC regulated.

Based on ease of installation, reliablilty and feature set which one would you favor, the Ultrastart or the Lynx?

Thank you again for your help !!

Mike

Hey gods_other_son. Brian here and I've used all three of these models and am happiest with the ultra start. I t has built in shock sensor and leds are in the antenna ie:less wires/junk to mount. If you plan to do alot of remote starts this would be the way to go. I've got an Ultrastart in both of my vehicles and won't put anything else. Just make sure you get a 4500XR for the extra range. The CompustarSS will only let you use the one remote. The others come with second valet remotes and you can add 1 or 2 more if you like.

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the input.  I have to agree - the fewer the parts the better.  I installed a chaep remote start in my GF's car a year ago.  Took a full day (I'm not an installer by trade) but it wasn't too horrible of an experience.  Now that I have all the remote start wires identified putting in a new remote start should not be a real big deal.  The only unknown for me will be hooking up the door locks and anything needed for the alram functions.  I hope that will not be too tough.

I really like both units (Lynx / Autostart) so I guess it comes down to range and ease of installation.

How would you compare the range of the Autostart to the Lynx in your experience with them?  Anything about either unit you do not like?

Thanks for you help, Mike

No prob guy. Personally prefer the ultrastart. The only thing is if the battery goes dead you will need to reset the shock sensor. It is electronis and built into the brain. The program button and LEDs are built into the antennae, two less holes to drill. And if you mount the antennae in the middle of the windshiel where it should be, the LEDs are very visible, detering would be thieves. If you are very far away from the vehicle, I find it more effective to hold the buttoms on the remote a little longer(2 to 3 secnds).
