Hey all,
Looking at this:
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&catalogId=4006970&langId=-1&productid=1015746&cmemid=121603FS1705
only $50 for a regular remote start and keyless entry, good for the price?
This will be installed on a '96 Mercury Sable.
Was reviewing past posts and discovered that i may need a 555f universal by-pass modual. Do I need this? and what is it for?
Thanks for your help!

A 555f is a bypass module for vehicles equipped with PATS. You will need to factory programmed keys to program the unit,  whereas the 555u needs a third factory programmed key. The 555f may cost less however i have experienced that the 555f can be a little more picky about placement around the ignition, and can be a headache to fix sometimes.

Passive Anti Theft System, It is an immobilizer system that will not allow the vehicle to run without a key in the ignition. The key has a transponder in it and there is a receiver around the ignition, the bypass tricks the system into thinking there is a key in the ignition. It isn't tied into the keyless entry so the car would have it reguadless

If the key has a THIN coating around it there's no PATS.

If it has a thick coating (like 1/4 inch)  with what looks like a rectangular  sort of door at the top of the key where the ring goes through, you need a 555F. Hope that helps.

alright, thanks guys, from the size of the Oval door at the top of the key... and you all saying to in your notes that it does need it... i'll go grab one.
Is this one from JCWhitney UNIVERSAL BYPASS MODULE from Bulldog (same brand as starter) ok for $20?
http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=10101&langId=-1&productid=190842&mediaCode=ZX&appId=506507
Or is there a website that is the 555f cheaper?
Thanks again for all your help!!

Best way to tell is if you have a anti theft light that blinks when locked or ignition is turned off.

Godd point! I forgot that one.  If there's a blinking  "THEFT" on the cluster, you have it.  If not, you don't.

Check eBay for the bypass they're always on there. Most of the time less than $20.
