I just installed a Sony cd player to replace the stock unit in my 2001 Dodge Durango. I used a harness that I bought from wally world. I have power and can change stations, but there is very faint sound only coming from the rear speakers, wtf?? can any one give me some advice??

Perhaps your stock head unit had some kind of an external amplifier that you need to bypass to use your new Sony?  If that's not the case, I'd try these steps:

1) Make sure you made all the correct connections between your wiring harness adaptor and the factory wiring harness.

2) Make certain all of your connections are tight and clean.

3) Check to see if anything is set weird on the Sony, such as front-to-rear fader, muting, etcetera.

double checked all the connections they are good

checked the fader, balance and all that stuff

I am getting some crackling and louder sound when I move the wires around so I will double check the splices.

The harness said something about a chrysler/infinity audio speaker deal but there is no connection for it on the stock harness and the stock head is not infinity. How can I find out if the stock head has an internal/external amp??

Well, if you didn't have any left-over wires when you installed the harness, you probably don't have an external amplifier on your stock head unit.  The fact that you got crackling and the volume changed when you moved the wires leads me to believe that your problem lies somewhere in your connections.  I'd investigate that fully before you try anything else.

You probably have an Infitity sound system and didn't hook up the blue remote turn on lead.

In the process of reconnecting the harness. There is one slot on the factory harness that has a wire, where there is not a matching slot (or missing wire) on the hook up. as far as the blue remote turn on lead, there is no wire on the factory harness to match where the blue remote wire on the store bought harness is, so I think the infinity system I can rule out. That one wire has me thinking though. Let me re-wire this thing and I'll let you know how it goes, thanks

The aftermarket stereo's remote turn on lead is blue, not the car's. The durango's turn on lead "should" be orange red.

tried the blue lead turn on and there is no change, bought a new harness and re-wired everything no change. I only get sound when I have it turned up to the max and it is choppy and static, I am totally lost......
