I happen to agree with squirrel's findings. I have had numerous Eclipse speakers rip out of 3/4" mdf. I also agree that if you blew to L7 subs there is something seriously wrong, be it an overstated capability of the sub or abuse of the system. What kind of cd player are you using and what is it's output voltage? Buy from an authorized dealer, use the system properly and you will not look back, these subs are one of the best sounding subs on the market today that play deep bass with authority.

This place here which im sure that they are authorized quoted me $499 each.  You mean 1.25 gross for each or both???

What could I have done wrong?  I had received them in a trade for some weight lifting equipment.  i checked them and they where good.  Actually they still work but on the inside on the sub the yellow accordion looking thing is torn.

You got used subs in a trade (that's what you did wrong). They could have been abused before you got them, and that propably led to them blowing. And the Accordian looking thing is called the Voice Coil Former. If that's ripped you're subs are toast.
1.25 gross per chamber of a sealed enclosure.

The box volume is 1.25 cu.ft. gross per speaker. Make the box with two separate chambers. Call around for a better price on the Titanium subs from authorized dealers within roadtrip distance. The yellow accordian thing is called a spider, it is there to keep the voice coil former centered in the magnetic gap as the cone travels up and down. If the sub is asked to do something it was not designed to do, in this case play a clipped signal (the amp ran out of clean power and produced distorted power for lask of better words). This causes a loss of control of the motion of the driver, in other words you accordian was pulled to far and ripped. This is usually due to exceesive gain on the amp, it is not a volume control, it is designed to match the ouput of a head unit to the input of an amp and ideally should be kept as low as possible.

You matched the RMS correctly, and from the sounds of it you had them wired correctly too. So don't beat yourself up too bad, you just took a chance on used subs.
Buy the Eclipse's new and from an Authorized dealer. Get the extended warrenty, build your box correctly, and you will be thrilled with the performance.
BTW, if you only have a 150amp alternator, you might consider getting a High Output alternator too (those Titaniums are power hungry!)

I agree with Forbidden about the gains. Where did you have them set?

And Forbidden is right about the Spider. I looked at the wrong link on the diagram when I said the VC Former. Sorry about that

Why would you recommend JL 12W7's over Eclipse SW9122's? The 12W7's have a 1.15" Xmax (one way), while the SW9122's have a 1.5" Xmax (one way). The Eclipse's have a longer throw, and will push more air. Not to mention the SQ/SPL mix of the Titaniums is unreal!
I know it's all personal preference, but I think you would be happier with the Eclipse Titaniums.
