i know all my sh*t about guitars and guitar amps but not this stuff as much. I have a very simple question. If my head unit says 45 x 4 on it (its a kenwood). Does that mean i get 4 speakers that are rated at like 11 watts to equal the 45 OR get four speakers that can handle at least 45 watts? So, in other words does each individual speaker get 45 watts or is the 45 watts split among all 4? Thanks

45 each, although they are always grossly overrated so yea kinda like 11 each lol

So, if i got speakers that can handle 150 watts is that too much? or will it sound just as good?

That would be 45 watts to each speaker to answer your question. (45 watts x 4 = 180watts your stereo is pumpin out according to the manufacturer)

Ok everyone I'm a new guy but I think I can handle this one.

45 x 4 means that you have 45 watts PEAK power to each channel. (For a total of 180 watts) RMS power delivered to each speaker is going to be something like 20 or 21 watts.

I hope that clears up any confusion.

thanks guys. i tried tellin my dad this and he stuck on the fact that 45 x 4 mean its 45 watts all together and that 45 is split amoung the 4 speakers. I told him im getting 150 watt speakers (150 watt peak). So, there RMS power is like 70-75 watts. But, he thinks hes right with the 45 watts divided amoung 4 speakers. haha i cant win with him

Have your dad read this tutorial http://www.bcae1.com/speakrat.htm but you should always look at the rms not the Max, and that head unit is probably putting out between 5-10 watts rms per channel. 45X4 means that each channel (or speaker) is getting 45 watts MAX, or 5-10 watts RMS each.

And just because a speaker says it is 150 watts does not mean it magically plays that loud, it will only play what it is given, in the case of your deck, about 15 watts rms (root mean square) of power per speaker.
