I just installed my car stereo but the AM band has static and crackling noise. What seems to be the problem?

What year make and model is your car? Also is the antenna built into the rear window?

Thanks for your quick reply. My car is a Volkswagen Beetle 72 model. The antenna is just installed into the front .

Don't know if this is true but from my own experiences, aftermarket radio manufacturers don't focus too much on the quality of their AM bands so much as the FM and CD/Tape.  Just my opinion.  No aftermarket radio I have ever had was worth a @#$% in AM mode (yes, they were the very expensive kind).
