Need some input.

I'm contemplating to put in the detachable faceplate of my kenwood cd player into the rear view mirror on my '96 Mustang.

Now my question is, should I modify (remove glass, then fiberglass extra material) the existing rear view mirror OR re-create a mold of it out of fiberglass and work with that.

Has anyone done this? I've seen some images (can't remember where) that had the faceplate inside the rear view mirror, with a piece of plexi-glass that was reflective (so you can see out the rear window) but yet you could still see the faceplate. It was held on by velcro. Then, when the anything would be adjusted, they just removed the plexi-cover.

Any info/images of something like this will be greatly appreciated.

i've seen people put 3 or 4" lcd screens in rearview mirrors, but why an entire faceplace?  how will you use the buttons on the faceplate if it's located behind glass, not to mention relocating all of the wiring to make it work?

if its done right i guess it would look alright, but honestly, if i saw it in a car, i'd laugh my ass off

remember, there is a fine line between slick and cheezy

just trying something different.

Unforutantely, the way my setup will be, i won't have room for the HU. I'll be putting in a LCD screen where the hu was, therefore leaving no place to place it. Don't know where would be a better place to place it that would be within reach.

it was done a while back.......what they did was mold the face plate into the mount of the origional mirror, and painted it to match the exterior.

now, one thing i've seen done with a faceplate that i liked was:

they relocated the faceplat and wires onto their aftermarket steering wheel, i think it was a momo, they put the faceplate right in the center where the SRS would normally be and fiberglassed it flush, i thought that was kinda slick, but if he didn't flush mount it and paint it right, it would have looked odd

i've also seen the same thing done on the instrument cluster, faceplate mounted directly above the speedometer, i thought that looked really sweet, and for the longest time i was planning on doing the same thing
