Is a inverted sub just for looks? I have never heard one before, just wondering what is so special other than looks ? and how do they sound?

thanks doug

They should sound just fine, a speaker makes sound on both sides of the cone. Note that when you invert a sub you should also reverse the polarity of the speaker to keep it in phase with the rest of the system. Sometimes subs are mounted for looks, other times it could be to gain airspace in the enclosure, no mounting depth inside the box and the list goes on.

inverted subs are mostly about looks, not quite as good a front facing cones, i wont get into it other then saying, soundwave shape, basket/ magnet interferance causing wave breakup, and many other things.  many do it and it is not to big of a deal, as they have a lot of brute base, and it does not matter for that.  and it is also not to be confused with reversing polarity on the speaker for phaseing the base wave to the other caraterisicts(i miss my spell checker..) of the car.  so the bottom line is, front cone is best for the best sound, but rear is ok, as the back wave is capable of reproduceing sound, just not quite as well.  that is why you dont see mids turned, much more apparent as the freq goes up....

speaking of mids turned around...

I just seen in a mag. some mids that were inverted....I thought no way but...I think that it has to be for looks....
