Hey all, I was just a little curious. What vehicles in the the market today has FIBER OPTIC wiring in it for data transmission, not lighting. I know right off that Mercedes and Infiniti has fiber optic wiring for either the stereo (CD changer) or cruise control. I almost thought for sure that Audi and Volkswagon had it too. If you all could reply and tell me what cars and the purpose of the fiber optic wire is used for in each car.

Thanks,

well from what i'm told teh new scion's have only one ligh bulb in them and all of the lighting is "channeled" from that bulb thru fibreoptics to the headlights, interior, instrument cluster, etc

however, i don't know how true that is, just something i was told when the car was still in the design phaze

I don't think that's right- one bulb for the whole vehicle.  That wouldn't possibly give enough light to the headlights to see at night.

sure he means the inside.

that could be possible.  Soon fiber optics are going to be in computer processors....being developed.  Scientists said they stopped light and then sent it off again.

I need quality equipment, feel free to donate.

The BMW 7 series uses what they call Intelligent Safety and Information System (ISIS) for the deployment of safety systems. All the safty modules within this vehicle communicate over a fiber optics. I believe they are calling it byte flight technology. It is super fast, able to record and transmit data in a few micro seconds. The purpose for ISIS is to be able to have multiple sensors in the vehicle that can transmit data, whether acceleration based, or angular rate based, back to a central unit that makes a descision whether to deploy air bags, etc. in the event of a crash.

Saab's use fiber-optic cables in their audio systems for signal and data in the 2003's and newer.

Well, I could see one bulb for the inside, just had to clear up the overstatement.  BMW stays ahead of the competition with new technology.  I have a buddy that works for them, and he said some of their new cars come with 72 on board computers!  What a nightmare that must be to troubleshoot.  I think I'd rather stay with my car (it's much simpler).

The new Audi A8 and the VW Phaeton use it for all entertainment systems in the car. It can pass more than one signal down the same strand, a light decoder sits on each end and deciphers the signal. The Touerag may use it, not sure though.
Want to know about Audi, I thought you did.
