hey folks, Im anting to do two kicker solo baric L7 or L5 8" subwoofers in a custom evnted box. its going to be a flat box so it looks like the floor in my trunk was raised up about 5 to 7 inches. and the vents will be about in the center between the two subwoofers.

That what it will look like! I need to know what amout of RMS wattage to use for them the L5 are like 350rms and the L7 are 450 RMS. I was told vented boxes do not need to be powered a lot. but I dont know what I should use. I think Im going to go with a kole amp. not kove, kole. I figure about half the wattage or 250w out of 350w or 350w out of 450w.

Do you know Spankyjohnson? He's a Big man. I'll tell him you did his boys a favor

Vented doesnt mean u've gotta give them less power, just means they dont need as much power to sound good. You can give them full rms power, or less if you want. Personally, i prefer giving things the power they ask for, so I can play them as loud as i want without distortion, etc.

More power = less chance of clipping = less chance of smelly speaker. Make sure you have a subsonic filter on the amp that you choose, this helps prevent smelly speaker and for pete's sake make sure the gain is not turned too high.

both of them are right. some rms ratings are more than half, some are less, but generally they are half of the peak, but peak really means nothing. rms is constant music power, peak is just what it says, it can reach that peak at a short burst of time when it gets louder but it wont retain that wattage for the entire time. ported is the way to go for overall listening quality as well as for low range freq. depth. just make sure you are exact with the specs. with the ported one, because its a whole lot less hit or miss than a sealed box. also did you ever consider using a 10" or bigger woofer and making the box down-firing? they sound excellent if done right. good luck.
