I don't want to sound like an idiot but how do you wire a diode on a relay?  I understand diode's inline for wires but how exactly is one connected for a relay?  is it placed underneath the cover of the relay or is it placed on the pins somehow?

The best way I found is to buy the relay harness from parts express.

They sell one with the diode all ready installed.

A diode across a relay prevents voltage spikes which sometimes lead to "relay chatter".  The striped side of the diode is usually connected to the 12V leg of the relay. Click here to see an actuall diagram in action.
