i have Rand McNallys program called Route planner and i would like to hook it up to a GPS system by being able to hook it up to my laptop when i go on long trips. i dont have a handheld GPS setup, nor to i plan on buying one. my whole plan would be to somehow get the route planner to work as a GPS setup with a connection that kinda says you are here type deal.

my question is what kind of cable would i need to hook up to an antenna. would this be fine to use: http:///.com/ebaymotors/dll?ViewItem&category=26436&item=2460199279

or is this ok to use with a pioneer HU. i soon plan to upgrade to a pionner DEH 7400 MP3 unit: http:///.com/ebaymotors/dll?ViewItem&category=38653&item=2460136929

or do i need an antenna like this: http:///.com/ebaymotors/dll?ViewItem&category=26436&item=2460552243 OR http:///.com/ebaymotors/dll?ViewItem&category=38631&item=2460187699

and then a BNC connector to connect to the antenna then a USB or serial cable to the back of the laptop. i am a newbie when it comes to navigation and am trying to keep it low cost as possible, but most effective as possible without spending a grand on a GPS in dash system.

My cousin gave me a program to look over and then teach him how to use it.

(Him and computers don't get along)

Check out this antenna:

I use my Dell laptop, Microsoft Streets and Trips, and a GPS antenna/unit I bought off ebay for $74:

I am a field tech.   I use it EVERYDAY.  Works great, couldn't imagine doing my route anymore using a thomas guide/mapbook.  GREAT on vacation, when there's traffic-We go around it.  Rarely lost.
