I am in the process of designing my sub box. I am using Phoenix Gold Tantrum-X 10" dual voice coil subs. PG recommends 0.7 cu.ft. for sound quality in a sealed enclosure, 0.6 fot SPL. My question is, what would the effect be of having a smaller enclosure? Should I use one sub instead of two? I have room for a box that is roughly 0.8 cu.ft. and I was thinking I would invert the subs to get a little more. The 0.7 includes the driver volume. It is going to be a combonation wood and fiberglass. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The smaller the enclosure, the more power you will need. It should be fine .6 to 1 cu FT. If all the room you have is for a box that is .8 cu FT then I would stick with the one sub. It would probably sound like garbage if you used two with that limitation.

Thanks auex! I made it a bit bigger. The volume I have according to the calc on this site is 1.27 cu. ft. I want to invert the subs, so I roughly calc'd the speaker displacement at 0.17 cu.ft. I figure that I can subtract that from the 0.7 to get my needed volume. Am I correct in assuming so? The top and front of my box will be fiberglass, so I'll add a little and lose a little here and there. Should I divide the box into two seperate chambers? Or is having two subs still going to create a SQ problem? Thanks again!

I would still head in the direction of a single sub for the space that you have, if you are using a sealed box that it is too small, power increase is necesssary and the usable range of frequencies will drop, most noticable in the amount of bottom end available. While yes two subs move a lot of air, their box limits the amount of bottom end that will be produced. They will be loud and tight but not have a lot of authority with bottom end. A box that has the right amount of airspace will play the lower range of frequencies at a louder level.

you could consider fiberglassing a whole enclouser, i am sure if you start lookig into area's that are not square, to fit a box in you will find alot more space possibally enouch for 2 .6 chambers

Well, I've decided to say so long to the back seats, so I have enough room for both subs. I already have two, that's why I was hesitant to use one. I have figured I have 0.73 for each sub, and I will be mounting them inverted. The manual that came with them says the recommended volume (0.7cu.ft.) INCLUDES the driver. If they are mounted upside down I will gain more, 0.17 cu.ft. per sub roughly. My last question is, should each sub have its own seperate chamber? I've heard pros and cons to both, I'm just wondering what would be best for my particular situation. Thanks again to everyone!!
