i usually test the tach wire in vAC 3-6v, i dont test the input wire from the 996
car type and model?

1995 Chevrolet Suburban.  I've notplugged my battery up yet to do a test.  i'm ready to test it now. I ohmed the tach wire before i hooked the multi-pin harness to the brain.  I really appreciate your help.
