Hi All,

Looks like a great forum!

I just got a 2004 Ford F250 Lariat with the Diesel engine. I'm trying to find the best alarm / starter combo for this truck. I've been looking at the web sites of diferent brands, but it's hard to guess which ones have a good reputation.

I'd rather pay extra and get a good one than struggle with a cheap one. I like the features of the Commando fm870 combo, but I really don't know anything about that brand.

I've installed a couple alarms and starters before.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I sell(and install) Commando products. I have used them now for a little over a year and have had no problems. That fm 870 unit is a very nice alarm/Remote Start unit. It has great range and has alot of features for the price. Just be sure that when you do the install on that truck that you use the starter timer mode. I have done two of the 04 trucks and they will not work in the tachless mode. I think it has somthing to do with the turbo. That truck also has no tach reference that I can find. I put the unit in starter timer mode and set it for 1.2 seconds and it worked like a charm. Good luck with your install.

What does the starter timer mode do? I 'm not familiar with that function.

like youre using w/ your key, its like releasing the key after 1.2 sec. the other ways that brianh mentioned that didnt work was tach, this is the same idea but it stop cranking dependently to the tachometer/engine speed.

I got your message. Thanks! A lot of good help.

The starter timer is how long the engine cranks for? Too long and you grind? Too short and it won't catch? Right now in Mass. it's about 20 deg. in the morning. It's hard to imagine 1.2 seconds cranking that diesel would do it.

Is the ideal situation to use a tach reference to monitor when the engine catches? According to earlier posts, it looks like this truck has no tach reference.

Does the tackless mode monitor voltage as an indicator the engine has started? If so, strange that any vehicle would not respond to that.

Is there a starter delay in the fm 870 to allow for the glow plugs to warm up or does the fm 870 monitor the glow plug wiring and start when ready?

I know it's a lot of questions and I appreciate your time. I'm sure I'll have more!

there should be a delay. most alarms have that feature now.

i just did an older ford with tach sense and it worked good

i cant remember what i set the crank time too..

there is a green wire that is tapped off along with four or five other wires. it is located behind the fuse box and down a little bit they are tapped to a large harness. this is a great tach wire. it is on all of the 03 super duties and on the four or five i did of the 04's.
