Hi, I had a 2000 Toyota Camery Solra. I try to use the parallel port of computer that send our 5v dc power. And I write a GUI to make my window go up or down. I bought a relay from Radio Shack that will trigger from the signal send out from my computer. The window will go down, but after the window go all the way down, the relay will burn and smoke come up. I also use a 3 amp diode to stop that, which only last few seconds before it burn the relay again. Does anyone know what cause the relay to burn, and is there a way to solve this problem. Thanks!

You have to have wired something way wrong. I have never smoked a relay, ever. Also have you ever heard of something called a fuse?

The way I connect the relay is:

I heard of fuse but I don't know how and what will it do. Also from N.O. to the motor of the window, I put a diode in there, but it does not work. So I don't know is it the way I wire the relay that cause to smoke the relay. And how exactly does the fuse help. Thanks!

The way you need to wire the relays is similiar to this diagram where as lock is roll up and unlock is roll down, you need two relays per window(1 for up and 1 for down). The fuse would have prevented you from frying the relay. You should read through , this as well.

Also, next time you link to an image make sure that you put the .jpg at the end of the link or you get a red X

This is how I wire mind, and is only for window down. I am not exactly sure what is the number on your diagram mean, and is this for all relay or I need to buy a specific one, and same thing with the fuse. Thanks!

Hi, is there a place where explain a little bite more detail on the diagram you provided, like what is the number mean, and where does each wire would go exactly. Thanks!

The numbers shown in diagram go like this -

85 and 86 = coil

30 = common

87 = N.O.

87A = N.C.

now you should be able to apply the above diagram to the relay you have.

so I need two relays to work for the windows, are there certain type of relay I need to buy, cause the one I use only had 2 Coil, Com and N.O., what is N.C. anyway. Also what kind of fuse do I need to use is it just any 12v fuse. Thanks!

You need SPDT, single pole double throw relays. For more info click on the link on the left that says relays.

N.C. is normally closed

Use the relay type auex mentions. If you look around you can find a SPDT relay that requires 5 volts to switch it if needed.
