Need to know... I've just recently heard that a number of Volkswagon vehicles run into a problem passing their smog inspection if the factory deck's been removed. I REALLY need more info on this. Rumor, truth, if true - what's the issue and is it in certain vehicles?
HELP ME.

I've never heard that one before and I highly doubt that anything having to do with the emissions control system uses electronics in the radio, but hey, anything's possible.

I think this is a result of not using the factory wiring harness when installing a new HU. I can't find the article but the conclusion was that if you add a new HU you need to use the stock wire harness. I don't know if this only apply's to the ground and power wires or to the whole harness but that was the jist of the article. I will post if I find it.

Interesting.  This is another reason to always use a wiring harness adapter when installing a head unit and to NEVER cut off a factory connector.

Yeah, I saw it on a tech show a couple of weeks ago, unfortunately I haven't been able to find an article anywhere. My suggestion would be to find a vw board and start lookin'. The car that was featured in the article was actually a recent golf not a jetta. I don't recall most of the details but in the end when the guy had his HU wired into the factory wiring he passed emissions, whereas, not using the harness caused him to fail.

This is interesting, I've never encountered this before. Mind you we don't have the same stingent regulations either. Let's get someone to find out about this for sure.

No there is nothing to cause you to not pass emissions in there.

The only major thing is that you CANNOT, remove the factory plug on the 1999 and newer or your warranty is null and void, and your car will no longer be able to be hooked up to the diagnostics computer.  The VW scan tool connects to the radio's plug, there is the VW data lines in the plug.

My mom has a 1999 vw, so i did my research.
