ok, i have a pioneer mono class d 1000w max amp and a perfect 12dvc in a .88 sealed down fire box lined with polyfill. the boost is down and frequency set right. the sub is wired at 2ohms.
the sub suffers from major overexcursion at high levels. this sub should not do this and i cant get it right. i was expecting it to pound much harder and handle way more. the xmax spec is 14.15 which is high for a sub so sag isnt an issue. what to do, what to do. should i wire it at 8 ohms,is the amp too powerful, what? is it a case where i should try another sub, jl 12w6?

Have you checked the manufacturers specs for the size of box? .88 sounds a bit small for a 12 inch sub. Im not sure this is your problem but it jumped out at me.

I don't think this sub is meant to be downfired.

Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1 is rated at 350 watts RMS.  Your Pioneer amp can deliver 600 watts RMS into 2 ohms.  You are over-driving the speaker and if yu keep it set up this way will eventually fry the voice coils.  Wire it at 8 ohms and the amp will deliver approximately 150 watts.  It will sound much better and be safer for the sub, although it is not the best match if you are looking for SPL.  0.88 CUFT is fine for a sealed enclosure size.

By the way, when mounting a Kappa Perfect sub in a down-firing configuration, Harmon Kardon (who own Infinity) recomends de-rating the power by about 20%.  In your case, that means limit the power to approximately  280 watts RMS.

i wired the sub at 8 ohms and its much better. i underestimated the rms power of the pioneer amp, and some others too.
learn something new everyday. im a happy customer.
thanks 12volt

yea, i wouldnt run the kappa down or up. A buddy of mine had some in a box, they sounded great facing back or forward, he faced them up, they sounded like ass. I'm not talkin about the acoustics of the car limiting its ability to hit, im sayin it sounded like sh*t. (excuse my french). It could be the same problem. But, you might wanna try what DY said, cuz when he had it like that, he was giving it 500 watts.

its not really a theory, its numerical fact. some subs cannot be faced up or down, due to the design. However, if you are happy with what you did, more power to ya! enjoy.
