Hey haemphyst, I'm a little confused about your equations you are using.  Why are you dividing twice?  The formula should be P=E^2/R.  But where are you getting the 8 from?  I ask this because I think your numbers are too low.

I asked my boss if I could plug our Parthanon subwoofer into the wall.  He told me that it wouldn't take it.  Of course it does have an efficiency of around 97 dB.  But with two sets of 8 layer voice coils, and them being so exposed to outside air, it should be able to handle trememdous amounts of power.  This was even when I suggested wiring the 4 2 ohm voice coils in series.  I don't think the problem was mechanical excursion as it can move 3" of linear one way.

I used a 15 z series RF a couple days ago and I got about 1 min 10 sec outta it. Someone had kicked in the dust cap and I wanted to make sure they didnt send it back to us so I made the thing smoke. So wrong but so much fun. If you wanna have real fun, we took 8 pioneer 12" subs and hooked them up in 2 ohm total and hooked them up to the wall but we had all of them in ported boxes so It just wailed. Man that was fun, thats what happens when you are an installer and am forced to set up for boxing day. We set up alright. We had the whole thing hooked up to a surge bar and used the switch to run burst threw the wall all day. That was definatly an attention getter.

P=E^2/R is a correct formula, but those numbers are based on the RMS voltage, and give peak power...
ex:
120*120=14400/4=3600 watts PEAK
To figure p-p voltage, multiply RMS voltage by 1.414
P=E(p-p)^2/8/R is the formula to give continuous power...
120*1.414=169.68*169.68=28791.3024/8=3598.9128/4=899.7282 watts RMS
This is the way I have always done it... (Because this is the way I remember it from my Navy Electrician's Days) I like the RMS numbers better than peak numbers.
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."
