I'm adding a pair of 6.5" speakers to the doors of my toyota truck. I've got a hole in the door-skin big enough to accomodate the woofers, but there isnt really nice places to put screws into the sheet metal. Is it okay to just mount the speakers to the plastic/fiber-board door panel? Or is just not strong enough? I'd like to mount the speakers to the sheet-metal, but I really don't want to fab a braket-- but I will if required. Suggestions?

The plastic/fiber board is not strong enough to hold them in place especially when you open and close your doors you might end up seeing your speakers go air bourne! Non-factory door speakers, sheet-metal or -- posted image.

Your best bet is doing what you do not want to do which is fabricate one. Ever try doing custom kick panels out of fiberglass? That will be your best bet I think.

you can also get a sheet of sheet meatel and screw it onto the door as a back plate. and then cut out a hole for the speaker to mount to. That's alot less work then the fiberglass.
