I can't seem to set the controls on the two amps on my system. I had everything set pretty good once and then I thought I could get it better and I made it worse. I know you are suppose to turn gains all the way down and then turn the HU up 3/4 and then increase the gain just prior to distortion, but when do you increase the bass boost and how much?

If you are running good quality subs and amps, you can leave the "bass boost" OFF.  This control is to make cheap speakers sound a little bigger than they are and overuse will lead to distortion and clipping and destroyed speakers more often than not.  Leave it off.

The quality is fair to good. The sub amp is a Clarion 1000 DPX - fair. And the amp powering the component speakers is a Kicker 600.4 - good. If I turn the bass boost off, can I increase the bass input? I am talking about the control on the Alpine HU, it is sub woofer control that ranges 0 - 15, I think. I have it set at 8. There are so many variables and I am trying to find that happy medium.

Yea, I'd definately leave the bass boost OFF on those amps and use the bass and treble controls in your HU if you want to punch the low end.  The Clarion should have better sound quality in general than the Kicker, by the way...
