I am trying to replace original radio in a 1986 Mercury Marquis with a CD player. Wiring is pastel colors with stripes--have no idea which wire is which.

Can anyone help?

More then likely common ground and you will have to rewire the car. Here is a link to the stereo wiring diagram for your car, here.

The grand marquis' do in fact share a common ground, the best option would probably be to get an aftermarket harness as DJmajicmark has implied, therfore you will not have to cut the factory harness, and run new wires to each speaker., cleanest and easiest solution to the "common ground".  Metra's harness no. is a 70-1770
